There are a few things I want to get out of the way before we start talking about Ram Jaane. One, it's a movie from 1995. Two, I'm not sure there's anything you can compare it to in terms of dialogue, mannerisms, and scene usage. Three, this is an extremely tough movie to find on the web (you'll be lucky if you can even find copies sold at all). Four, like most Bollywood classics from the 90s (barring Henna), the sound quality is really bad. And, lastly, it's probably the funniest movie I've ever seen. I'll go a step further, though. I'd say Ram Jaane is one of my Top 10 favorite movies of all time. For those of you who have seen Bollywood films from the 90s or any Indian film for that matter, you know that many of them revolve around a melodramatic romance between two people. In some cases it's more melodramatic than others (which is saying a lot if you watched some of the melodrama from Bollywood). Either way, this is what makes Ram Jaane an anomaly in Bollywood cinema as well as Indian cinema in general. The story is structured like most Bollywood movies (I can't say it isn't because it's not). Two people fall in love, they start dating, there's drama, they break up or postpone their wedding. Then suddenly they decide to get married and the reason given never seems to make sense. It doesn't matter though because the ending is always happy and there are plenty of scenes that are meant to paint an illusion of romance. Ram Jaane does not have this structure whatsoever. What I mean by that is it doesn't have any melodramatic scenes between the main characters nor do its scenes attempt to paint an illusion of romance. Instead, it revolves around the characters finding out that they are siblings and then the two of them getting to know each other almost as if they are siblings. Combine this with the fact that Ram Jaane is extremely funny and you have yourself a Bollywood classic. One of the many hilarious scenes is when Ram Jaane's husband tells her to shave off her mustache because it will make her look like an older woman. The thing I love about this scene is how Ram Jaane basically doesn't take offense but instead acknowledges her husband's harshness by saying, "Aap kya hua hai?" (What's wrong with you?). I also love that the man who gives the advice is in for a rude awakening when Ram Jaane starts dating his son. This movie is full of different kinds of humor in general. It's hard to pin down but it might be something like this: the writing style of the film has characters who are anything but subtle, yet there are moments when they are extremely sly about their intentions. For example, Ram Jaane's husband wants her to get married quickly because he wants to be sure she lives up to his expectations before he dies. He tells her she needs to do this for his son because he doesn't want another girl in the house. eccc085e13
